Steps To A Special Event

Next week is going to be crazy!! Monday I was invited to participate in an auction and dinner at the Weekapaug Golf Club. Thursday I was invited to showcase my work at an annual party one of my students host. Then that weekend I will be at Old Mystic Village for the first of three outdoor art shows held there.

For the golf club I decided to offer a painting of the course to the auction. My usual process for most of my paintings is to dive right in, particularly in the form of Plein Air painting. When I do a commission however, I have to plan a little. One time I Plein Air painted at a country club in East Greenwich RI. Then I donated the wet painting. This time I’m working from reference photos I took. One of the young men took me around on one of their carts and I snap a few photos of the favorite spots. I started with a sketch on paper. It’s important that the composition works with the format of the canvas you will be painting on. I worked out some ideas but I decided I better get the actual canvas. I added photos below.

The day wasn’t exciting as far as colors and cloud action but that’s where I will use artisistic license. The first photo shows the sketch on paper.  Then when I pulled the canvas out (2nd photo) I saw I had more room in the width. I did like how the hazy sun was glistening on the water in the far right so I may incorporate that in. The photos show the ninth hole, a favorite for golfers and the view is particularly gorgeous. I decided right of the bat, this needed to be a somewhat panaramic view. I’m torn between keeping the scene true to what it is since it’s a memory of the patrons and minipulating the scene to add elements I thought were interesting from a painters point of view. One thing I really wanted to add was an Osprey nest but I decided to stay more true to the actual scene so I couldn’t fit it in. Stay tuned for more on the progress.

Later in this same week is the party that will be hosted by one of my students. A party with friends hosted by a collector is one of the best ways for me to reach interested buyers. Referrals are a lifeline for artists even more than any art show. The photos shows one of the paintings I sold last year at her event. This is now available in various print form. Click Here To See
